THIS NODULE WAS NOT FOUND INSITU BUT FROM THE ID OF THE SMALL AMMONITES FOUND IN THE MATRIX AND THE TEXTURE OF THE ROCK I  THINK IT IS A ' TOP STONE ' NODULE FROM THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF THE BLACK VEN

MARLS JUST BELOW THE BELEMNITE MARLS

NOTE THAT IN LIFE THE CONES WOULD HAVE BEEN VERTICAL AND NOT PENDULOUS AS SHOWN HERE

A REMARKABLY WELL PRESERVED ICHTHYOSAURUS communis FROM THE JURASSIC LOWER LIAS  FLATSTONES OF STONEBARROW CLIFFS CHARMOUTH DORSET

THE FLATSTONE WAS IN FOUND IN SITU SKULL FIRST INTO THE CLIFFS - THE TAIL DEFLECTION WAS EX NODULE AND NOT RECOVERED.

PREPERATION WAS FINISHED WITH ACID TO REVEAL EXTENSIVE SKIN COVERAGE - THE SKIN SHOWING IS THE INNER SURFACE OF THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE BODY, THE UPPER LEFT SIDE  SKIN HAVING BEEN LOST PRIOR TO FOSSILIZATION

LEFT FORE PADDLE WITH A PROMICROCERAS planicosta

PARTLY COVERED BY FILIMENTS ALONG THE TRAILING EDGE OF THE FOREFIN. THE FILIMENTS REDUCED TURBULENCE AND CAVITATION WHICH WOULD HAVE GIVEN WARNING TO PREY OF THE APPROCH OF THE ICHTHYOSAUR

ALTHOUGH RARE FILIMENTS ARE REPORTED FROM OTHER SPECIMENS
